The song tells the story of a mother who lives a hectic life. On a late-night Christmas Eve drive on a snow-covered road on her way to Cincinnati, Ohio, the woman begins sorting out her emotions and bemoans not having enough time to do the things that really matter. Then, her car hits a patch of black ice, causing the woman to lose control of her car. She panics, takes her hands off the steering wheel and cries out to Jesus; shortly thereafter, the car stops spinning and safely stops on the shoulder. After taking stock of the situation (and seeing that her baby has remained fast asleep in the rear seat), the woman decides to let "Jesus take the Wheel" of her life.

Underwood tells a story of good-bye when she is ready to leave home after graduating high school. "Before He Cheats" tells the story of a woman taking revenge on her potentially unfaithful boyfriend.

She imagines him hanging out and flirting with a "bleach-blond" girl shooting , buying her a drink, dancing, and hoping to be "getting lucky" with her. In retaliation, she does several law-breaking actions including vandalizing his customized four-wheel drive vehicle by scratching its side with a key, carving her name into its leather seats, smashing the headlights with a Louisville Slugger baseball bat and slashing all four tires. She hopes that this will make him "think before he cheats" again.

"Wasted" is a mid-tempo that deals with themes of addiction, including alcoholism. The song has two characters who each have to stop the addiction from taking over their lives. One of them gets out of addiction to a relationship, and the other gets out of addiction to alcohol.

"So Small" is the first single for which Underwood shares a writing credit. Underwood co-wrote the song "I Ain't In Checotah Anymore" but it was not released as a single from her debut album Some Hearts.

"So Small" is a feeling song on how people invest so much of their time and energy into things that aren't really important, and you don't really realize that until it's too late. "All-American Girl" is the second single for which Underwood shares a writing credit, the first being "So Small", which preceded it. The song is a mid-tempo country-pop song, with a soaring chorus. Underwood stated in an issue of Entertainment Weekly that the high note during the bridge in the song is the highest note she has ever hit.

The song centers around a "beautiful, wonderful, perfect all-American girl." The first verse tells the story of a father hoping for a baby boy to continue his legacy, but "when the nurse came in with a little pink blanket, all those big dreams changed". The baby girl now has her father "wrapped around her finger", and his heart belongs to that "all-American girl." The second verse then shifts to 16 years later when the girl is now a teenager who falls for the "senior football star." Just like the girl's father, she becomes the center of the boy's world. The final bridge tells of when the girl and boy get married and are expecting "one of their own". When she asks the boy what he's hoping for he replies with "one just like you": an "all-American girl." Underwood said the song is in part her autobiography.

The song's current digital sales in the U.S. already passed the million mark selling over a million copies and certified Platinum by the RIAA.

The song is one of four tracks on the album co-written by Underwood, and the third consecutive one to be released as a single from the album. It is a moderate up-tempo describing a woman meeting a man at a club and later eloping with him in Las Vegas after having had too much to drink that night. She wakes up the next morning, "thinkin' bout Elvis somewhere in Vegas", to discover that she does not even know her last name (i.e., she married the man while she was intoxicated), and worries that her "mama would be so ashamed." The music video portrays the song as a prequel to her "Before He Cheats" song, even going so far as to hire the same actor to play the man in question.

"Just a Dream" is a mid-tempo song backed by a string section. The song chronicles an 18 year-old woman going to the church in her wedding dress, with the listener believing she's going to her wedding. However, it is revealed as the song goes that she's going to her husband's funeral instead, who was a soldier killed in action. During the funeral, she wishes that everything going on at the moment is all "just a dream."[

"I Told You So" is a mid-tempo in which the narrator poses a hypothetical situation, asking how his lover would react if he said he wanted to come back home. He asks if she would say that she loves him, or "simply laugh at [him] and say 'I told you so'" because she has found someone else.

Underwood began writing songs for Play On in February, collaborating with Brett James, one of the three co-writers of her hit single "Jesus, Take the Wheel."They collaborated on the song with Mike Elizondo, who has collaborated with Eminem and Dr. Dre; Elizondo came up with the main melody of the song, to which James and Underwood set the lyrics. James then suggested the title "Cowboy Casanova" off a list of potential titles that he had, and the three wrote lyrics about a male character who is a "devil in disguise." Of this character, Underwood said, "I think to every woman, this song would be telling a story about someone they know or met or has tried to pick them up in a bar" and "We're not trashing this guy, we're just warning these other girls about him."The song is moderately paced, and features rock-inspired guitar riffs in the introduction and verses, and also the violin and banjo-esque qualities which travel into the refrain. The song is composed in D minor, in common time with a tempo of 120 beats per minute. Underwood's vocals span from A3 to D5.
